MASG 1020 - Functional Anatomy and Kinesiology for Clinical Massage

Credits: 4

Catalog Description
In this course students study all the following body systems as they apply to therapeutic massage: circulatory, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, and articular. Emphasis is on the relationship among muscle attachments, joints, and bony landmarks. Examination of human movement through association of muscle and muscle function to levers and their connection to planes of movement and the supporting structures are addressed. In addition, the application of the understanding of kinesiology to safe and effective massage therapy is addressed related to all body systems.

Prerequisite(s) (must have a grade of C or better): BIOL 1102  and BIOL 1104
Additional fee to student: No

Learner Outcomes
  1. Identify all bony structures and muscles throughout the human body including the trunk and extremities.
  2. Describe characteristics of the following body systems as they apply to therapeutic massage: circulatory, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, and articular.
  3. Describe all muscular movement in the body and palpate major muscles and muscle groups.
  4. List origin, insertion, nerve, and action for all muscles throughout the human body.
  5. Identify how musculoskeletal systems are impacted by massage therapy.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of how body systems operations impact the provision of safe, effective massage.
  7. Work cooperatively with peers in lecture and lab and accept diversity among the student population.

Major Areas of Course Content
  1. Muscles: innervation, origin, insertion, and action/function
  2. Joint motion possible at each joint
  3. Physiology of the following systems: circulatory, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, and articular
  4. Body motion in relation to joint axes and planes
  5. Critical thinking skills
