Catalog Description
A course in photography for publication, with an emphasis on digital photography and producing photographic images for delivery through a digital medium. Areas of instruction include the operation of the digital camera, preparing images for digital display, principles of photographic communication, photography as part of the journalistic process, photojournalism history, law and ethics, and the use of computers in photographic communication. Prepares students to capture, edit and display photographs in professional publications, especially for publication on the World Wide Web and other digital media.

Learner Outcomes
- Operate a digital camera.
- Understand the principles of photographic communication, including elements of composition, the use of light and shadow, and the impact of angle, framing and depth of field, etc.
- Convert images into digital information for use in a publication.
- Use computer software to manipulate digital images and to design materials for publication.
- Demonstrate ability to work with subjects individually and in groups for the purpose of producing photos for publication.
- Develop a critical vocabulary for describing and understanding photographic communication.
- Understand basic principles of photojournalism history, law and ethics.
Major Areas of Course Content
- Basic skills of online reporting, writing and editing for the Internet.
- Development of a series of students’ postings ranging from daily blogs to investigative features to commentaries.
- Training in the entire news process from story ideation, identification of sources, research and reporting, writing, revising, and final editing, as well as the use of hypertext links to amplify content and skill in interactive communication with readers.
