Catalog Description This course explores the history of visual culture through a global perspective, from the early modern period to the present. Traditions of individual regional cultures will be examined, as well as interactions between various cultures. The course focuses on the forms, functions, and symbolism of images, objects, and spaces, as well as the materials, techniques, and skills used by artists, architects, artisans, and laborers to make aesthetic objects. The use, value, and meaning of artworks will be analyzed in relation to historical circumstances, societal values, and shifting personal and collective identities.
